  3. Users' Manual for QINSTALL.EXE - 
  4.         Installation Utility for QCDRUN (TM) CD-ROM Library
  5.  
  6.  
  7.         QINSTALL is the Installation Utility for the QCDRUN CD-ROM 
  8. Library System for Microsoft Windows. If you copy the distribution 
  9. files directly from the floppy diskette onto your hard drive, the
  10. system will not work because the compressed program files will
  11. not have been expanded, the [QCD] section will not have been inserted 
  12. into your WIN.INI file, and the data-base files QCD.INI and CDLIST.INI
  13. will not be created. QINSTALL runs ONLY from the distribution floppy 
  14. diskette.
  15.  
  16.         All QCDRUN programs automatically locate the main Windows 
  17. working directory on your hard drive and search there for .PIF and 
  18. .INI files and major Windows operational files. Certain operating 
  19. options in QCDRUN rely on the availability of the Windows utilities 
  20. WINFILE (File Manager), WRITE, NOTEPAD, and PIFEDIT (the .PIF Editor) 
  21. in your main Windows working directory, and will not operate correctly 
  22. if these are absent or located elsewhere.

  24.         QINSTALL:
  25.  
  26.         - creates a QCDRUN working directory on your hard drive 
  27. (default is c:\qcd);
  28.  
  29.         - copies and expands working files from the distribution 
  30. floppy diskette into the working directory;
  31.  
  32.         - locates the WIN.INI file in your Windows directory and 
  33. adds a [QCD] section to it; and
  34.  
  35.         - creates CD-ROM database files in Windows .INI format -  
  36. QCD.INI (in the Windows directory and backed up to the QCDRUN working 
  37. directory) and CDLIST.INI (in the QCDRUN working directory).
  38.  
  39.                                               
  40.         QINSTALL requires the QCDRUN subroutines QPWA and QPWV for 
  41. Registration Password input and verification. QINSTALL shells to
  42. QDOC.EXE to allow you to read and print documentation.
  43.  
  44.  
  45.         QINSTALL : Initial Operation:
  46.  
  47. a.      From Windows Program Manager menu - select File Run
  48.  
  49. b.      Enter the Command Line  d:qinstall, where d is the floppy
  50. drive containing the QCDRUN distribution diskette; press ENTER (from 
  51. the keyboard) or click OK (left mouse button)
  52.  
  53.  
  54.         QINSTALL : General Instructions and Operations
  55.  
  56. Please be aware:        
  57.  
  58.         At any prompt in QINSTALL - Clicking "Cancel" unconditionally
  59. terminates the program.
  60.  
  61.         To accept defaults (when shown in prompts) - press "ENTER" 
  62. or click "OK"
  63.  
  64.         To change from defaults - enter from the keyboard, then press
  65. "ENTER" or click "OK"
  66.  
  67.         All mouse operations in QINSTALL use the (standard) left 
  68. mouse button.
  69.  
  70.          Any timed Message or Display window (without an "OK" button) 
  71. can be closed, allowing the program to continue ahead to the set time
  72. (which is a maximum of 5 seconds), by placing the cursor in the window
  73. and clicking the left mouse button.

  75.  
  76. Step by step:
  77.  
  78. a.      QINSTALL opens with a copyright notice that clears in 5
  79. seconds.
  80.  
  81. b.      QINSTALL tests for a previous installation of QCDRUN in 
  82. WIN.INI. It notifies you if a previous installation is found. 
  83. Continuing QINSTALL beyond this point will overwrite the previous 
  84. installation information in the [QCD] section of WIN.INI and in 
  85. the [main] section of QCD.INI. Unless you choose to install to a 
  86. different QCDRUN working directory, continuing will also overwrite 
  87. all program and text files.

  89.         Continue to install in the face of a previous installation
  90. ONLY if you have backed up QCD.INI and CDMENU.INI to save data on 
  91. all CD-ROMs already installed; otherwise click "Cancel", make backups 
  92. of the .INI files, and then restart QINSTALL. If you are running 
  93. QINSTALL just to insert the Registration Password and remove the 
  94. registration messages and use limits from the shareware distribution 
  95. of QCDRUN, QCD.EXE contains a simpler, quicker, and safer method 
  96. which is preferred. If you choose to continue, QINSTALL next tells 
  97. you the path for the previous QCDRUN working directory.
  98.              
  99. c.      QINSTALL then  prompts you for:
  100.  
  101.         -       The Floppy Drive Source for Installation - the 
  102. floppy drive containing the QCD distribution diskette; default is 
  103. A; enter as the drive LETTER ONLY (A, NOT A: or A:\);
  104.  
  105.         -       The Hard Drive Destination Directory for Files - 
  106. the intended QCD working directory on your hard drive; default is 
  107. C:\QCD; enter in the form d:\dir; and
  108.  
  109.         -       The CD-ROM Drive; no default; enter as the drive 
  110. LETTER ONLY.
  111.         
  112.         These entries are critical to the proper installation and
  113. operation of QCDRUN. QINSTALL will not accept blank entries for any 
  114. of these, and will prompt for verification of all entries.
  115.                                                            
  116.  
  117. d.      QINSTALL copies all files from the first distribution diskette 
  118. to the QCDRUN working directory. It then searches the QCDRUN working
  119. directory for the compressed file QCDX.EXE, which is on the second 
  120. disk for distribution in 360K 5.25 inch format, and on the single 
  121. distribution disk in other formats. If it does not find QCDX.EXE, 
  122. it prompts you to insert the second distribution diskette into the 
  123. floppy drive and copies all files. QINSTALL then expands the two 
  124. compressed files QCDD.EXE and QCDX.EXE (LHA self-extracting format).

  127. e.      QINSTALL creates the [main] section of the QCD.INI file,
  128. containing the following:
  129.                   
  130.                 CDD=  (CD-ROM drive)
  131.                 NCD=  (# CD-ROMs installed, initially set to 0)
  132.                 Path= (QCD working directory)
  133.                           
  134.               
  135. f.      QINSTALL backs up your old WIN.INI to WININI.QCD. It then 
  136. adds a [QCD] section to the WIN.INI file, containing:
  137.  
  138.                 Ix=k    (encrypted index number of unregistered uses)
  139.                 Password= (initially blank - contains password for 
  140.                         registered versions)
  141.  
  142. g.      QINSTALL then  prompts you for:
  143.  
  144.         -       Your name (first name and surname)
  145.         -       Company name
  146.  
  147.  
  148. h.      QINSTALL adds to the  [QCD] section of the WIN.INI file:
  149.  
  150.                 Name= (your name)
  151.                 Co=   (company name)
  152.  
  153.         QINSTALL will accept blank entries for both name and company
  154. name. Note that the entries here must be identical to the name and 
  155. company name used on your Registration Form or your Registration 
  156. Password may not be valid. QDOC.EXE prints a Registration Form 
  157. incorporating the exact identity information in WIN.INI to avoid 
  158. this problem.

  161. i.      QINSTALL requests the Registration Password and checks for
  162. validity. Leave blank unless you have requested and received a
  163. Password from QUART, Inc. If you attempt to insert an incorrect or 
  164. invalid password, QINSTALL will terminate password entry after 3
  165. unsuccessful attempts. If you have received a password from QUART, 
  166. Inc. and cannot enter it successfully, contact QUART, Inc. for 
  167. assistance. Successful password entry allows unlimited use of QCDRUN.

  169.  
  170. j.      QINSTALL verifies successful installation and backs up
  171. QCD.INI to the QCD working directory.
  172.  
  173.  
  174. k.      QINSTALL calls QDOC.EXE to allow you to read or print out 
  175. QCDRUN documentation.
  176.  
  177.  
  178. l.      Because of the risks of intentionally or unintentionally
  179. overwriting .INI files and all files in the working directory, and
  180. to conserve hard drive space, as its final step QINSTALL erases 
  181. itself and the compressed program files QCDX.EXE and QCDD.EXE from 
  182. the working QCDRUN directory. You may rerun QINSTALL from the 
  183. distribution floppy diskettes at any time. BUT - QLIB.EXE performs 
  184. all operations necessary for maintaining or editing the CD-ROM 
  185. Library after installation, and QCD.EXE contains a safe routine 
  186. for entering the Registration Password. The only reasons for rerunning 
  187. QINSTALL are file corruption or loss from outside factors (damaged 
  188. hard drive, viruses, badly-behaved or incompatible other programs) 
  189. or if upgrading to a later version of QCDRUN.

  192. m.      QINSTALL does not automatically install the programs as 
  193. icons in Program Manager. Your QCDRUN working directory contains 
  194. icons (QCD.ICO, QDOC.ICO, and QLIB.ICO) for the QCDRUN files that 
  195. operate as standalones - QCD.EXE (the CD-ROM Loader), QDOC.EXE 
  196. (the Documentation Utility), and QLIB.EXE (the CD-ROM Library Editor). 
  197. Use the File New functions of the Program Manager menu to set up 
  198. these programs with their icons. QINSTALL also does NOT modify your 
  199. AUTOEXEC.BAT file to put your QCDRUN working directory in the DOS 
  200. PATH; you may do this with Notepad or any ASCII text editor if you wish.
  201.  
  202. NOW - QCDRUN IS COMPLETELY INSTALLED!
  203.  
  204. To run QCD.EXE and load and run any CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive:
  205.  
  206. Click on the QCD icon in Program Manager OR
  207.  
  208. Use the File Run function of Program Manager with the Command Line:
  209.         d:\dir\qcd - where d:\dir is the QCDRUN working directory.
  210. If you have added the QCDRUN working directory to your DOS PATH, the 
  211. Command Line for File Run is : QCD
  212.              
  213. To run QLIB and add to, edit, or maintain the master CD-ROM Library:
  214.  
  215. Click on the QLIB icon in Program Manager OR
  216.  
  217. Use the File Run function of Program Manager with the Command Line:
  218.         d:\dir\qlib - where d:\dir is the QCDRUN working directory.
  219. If you have added the QCDRUN working directory to your DOS PATH, the 
  220. Command Line for File Run is: QLIB
